Southport Lagoon Four Wheel Drive 4WD Track Huon Valley Tasmania

Introduction

The Southport Lagoon 4WD Track provides the visitor with access to the western side of Southport Lagoon where you will find camping spots and access to launch your boat. Southport Lagoon is a popular fishing location, however access is restricted to sturdy off-road vehicles as the track is rocky. There are a number of camping areas in the region and note that to launch your boat it is necessary to carry it some metres from the parking area to the water.

  • Land conversation area, care must be taken. Be careful id boating on SOuthport Lagoon due to shallow water and tidal movements.

Comments

  • If fitted, please use UHF channel 10 to talk with other track users on your way in or out of the lagoon. This is to enable you to choose an appropriate place to pull over to allow another vehicle to pass. Please don't travel in convoy; leave enough room for vehicles travelling in the other direction to pass.

Recommended 4WD itinerary:

  1. From Dover or Southport, head towards Hastings Cave until the bitumen road ends. Continue towards Cockle Creek.

  2. Afer 3 kilometres, you will come to Ida Bay Railway - cross the level crossing.

  3. After a total of 4.5 kilometres, turn into the track on the left which is the start of the Southport Lagoon track.

  4. Continue for a total of just under 11 kilometres where you will find the campground and day use area.

A total of 10 individual campsites are provided near the NW edge of Southport Lagoon. The maximum capacity of the entire campground is 40 people. Each campsite is numbered and camping must only take place at these numbered sites. Campsite bookings are not required. Max stay permitted is 7 days. You must bring your own water. Rubbish bins are not provided, do you must take all your rubbish when you leave.

Please note: Track closures may occur at any time during the year. This may be due to vehicles going off the designated track or wet conditions which will lead to unacceptable environmental damage occurring or where safety is an issue. Basic facilities are available for use by day visitors at Southport Lagoon including a picnic table, fireplace composting toilets are provided. To ensure they work correctly it is important not to place any foreign objects, portable chemical toilet contents or rubbish into the toilet system.

In this area:

Southport Lagoon is an ideal destination for kayakers and canoeists and a designated dinghy launch point is located at the campsite. The maximum allowable length of dinghies is 14ft and the maximum engine size is 15 HP. Larger boats and boat trailers are not permitted. Vehicles can be parked in the day use area and dinghies must be carried to the water on foot. Posts that mark the lagoon’s deep water channels which should be followed to avoid damage to shallow seagrass beds. Personal motorised water craft such as jet skis are not permitted.

A 5 knot speed limit applies to the entire lagoon.
